How’s Your Sleeping?

sleeping-peacefullyHas this ever happened to you – you crawl into bed, tired, exhausted and DETERMINED to fall asleep quickly, only to find yourself tossing and turning an hour later?

Or maybe this scenario – you fall asleep quickly, but find yourself waking up at around 3 or 4am, and unable to fall back to sleep?

Frustrating, isn’t it??

This often happens when we are under stress. Too many thoughts swirling in our brain and no way to process them! Overwhelmed, we will ourselves to break the pattern, but those old thoughts just keep swirling and swirling, round and round. The fatigue builds, the stress expands, and all we want to do is GET TO SLEEP!

How to Break the Habit?

The secret key to falling asleep easily, or falling back to sleep, is to stop trying! You see, the harder you “try” to fall asleep, the more it evades you. The key to getting a good night’s sleep actually lies in not “trying”, but “allowing” your body and mind to be quiet, peaceful and at ease.

Quick Tip to Getting a Good Night Sleep

Here is an exercise from my TranformationZ 30-day Stress Reduction Program. Try it for a few nights and notice your sleep become deep and restful. Do this exercise right before bed.

Creating a Shield of Light

  • Take a few deep breaths
  • Ask that all that you do or experience be for the highest and most loving good
  • Visualize a stream of light coming from above your head and flowing over your body
  • You can imagine this light in any color
  • Allow the light to flow in, through and around you
  • Ask that the light protect you from anything that is not for your highest and most loving good and that it help you to be open to your intuition and higher self
  • Let a deep calm spread over you – snuggle up, and close your eyes.

Good night, Sleep tight!

Healthy Eating Tip – the Power of Protein

Grilled chicken breastsEating large amounts of protein is really in now – from body builders downing protein shakes to moms on the go grabbing protein bars as they shuttle their kids between activities. What’s the buzz about?

Protein is an important component in every cell in our body. Our hair and nails are mostly made of protein. Protein is commonly referred to as the “building blocks” of the body. We need it to build and repair our tissues, and to make the hormones on other chemicals in our bodies.

Protein is an essential element of a healthy diet. Yet be careful, because not all protein rich foods are created equal. Make sure you select the leanest cuts of meats available. Processed meats, such as hot dogs, should be avoided because of very high amounts of fat and sodium. Other good sources of protein are eggs (consider just the whites, if you are concerned about cholesterol), fish, beans, nuts, and low-fat dairy.

The Hidden Secret of Protein in Weight Loss

The power of protein lies in the ability to satiate and satisfy the appetite. Recent studies have shown that protein is more satiating than both fat and carbohydrate! Eating protein will stabilize your blood sugar and curb your appetite. Consider protein your friend in losing weight.

Do you have a favorite recipe for a protein rich food?

Singin’ the Blues – and How to Change the Tune!

jumping-for-joyYou know the feeling -– when everything seems to be “off”, you are not on your game, and quite frankly, you feel lousy.

In a funk…down and out…there are many expressions for this feeling. The music industry is loaded with soulful, sad songs. Does it actually make us feel better to listen to these lyrics? Does misery really love company?

More importantly, what can we do to get ourselves out of the rut?

Here is a powerful tip that I have found to be helpful – with myself and with my clients.

Get moving!

Moving into action helps release the stress and shifts both body and mind towards positive energy.

We free up a tremendous amount of energy when we move our bodies. Our bodies were designed to move. Too often when we are stressed we forget to move; we can even forget to breathe deeply.

Spending too much time in our thoughts prevent us from clear thinking and clear decisions. Moving your body will free up energy –- not just physical, but mental as well.

The Problem with Diets

Weight LossDieting….it may seem that we are always “on” a diet, or “off” a diet. We have our “good” days…and our “bad” days. Maybe we’ll start tomorrow, or even better, start on Monday. Sound all too familiar?

The Problem:

Diets have a beginning, a middle, and an end. By using our will power, we stick with a healthy food plan, for a while. Perhaps we are trying to fit into an article of clothing for a special occasion; perhaps we had a scare from our doctor. The end result is the same – we lose a bit of weight, and then go “off”. We revert easily back to our old habits, and often gain back the weight, and them some. It’s a wild roller coaster ride that leaves us stuck and frustrated.

The Missing Link:

It is imperative to eliminate the negative, self limiting and self sabotaging thoughts in our mind in relation to our food choices, our body image and our self esteem. Without addressing these beliefs, we will remain on that diet roller coaster, and the implications to our health and well being are serious.

The Solution:

Of course you have to make the behavioral changes and make healthy food choices with moderate size portions. Yet it is just as important to make the necessary changes in your thoughts as well – those thoughts that contributed to putting on the extra weight in the first place. Making the INSIDE changes along with the OUTSIDE changes, you will achieve lasting and permanent results.

Have you had challenges with dieting? What has worked for you? What hasn’t?

Your Words Count!

Adapted from the TransformationZ stress reduction program

Words Count
The words we speak are extraordinarily powerful. They have the power to hurt as well as heal. When under stress we communicate without thinking; our words are often tinged with anger and resentment.

Sometimes we withhold, lapsing into the “silent treatment”. Other times we are sullen and critical. These are all coping mechanisms, ways we have learned to adapt to stressful situations.

A good way to stop and think about our words is to slow down and take a breath. I find this so helpful in my life. It opens awareness not just to our words, but also to how we speak as well. For it is not just the words we say but how we say them that is equally important. Often we speak quickly; our words come rushing out fast and furious, without being mindful to our inner feelings. When we open to the awareness of our words, we tend to speak more slowly, and we communicate more thoughtfully.

How do you communicate with others? With your family? With people at work? With yourself?

The Healing Power of Music

Healing MusicThey say…”music soothes the savage beast”. For me, music moves me unlike any other art. It stirs emotion in a very healing way.

How does music affect you? What kinds of music do you enjoy? Have you ever realized that we gravitate towards different music depending on our day or even our mood?

I happen to love classical music – particularly Chopin. A Chopin nocturne or sonata fills me with a passion that reaches deep into my soul. I also like the music of the 80’s which stirs happy memories. There is nothing more fun than turning the volume up and dancing away to a favorite tune – which I usually do when I am home alone!

Music can also heal. Music can quiet stressful feelings and slow down a racing heartbeat. It can create feelings of hope and love. Music is a gateway to the heart and soul.

What music affects YOU?

Creating Rituals

creating-ritualsI saw a fascinating exhibit at a museum this week. The topic was “Creating Rituals”, and people were invited to post on a bulletin board the many rituals involved in their lives.

What an amazing glimpse into the private reflections of ordinary folks. So many people have rituals that go far beyond the usual ones of lighting candles, saying a prayer or giving thanks.

So what is a ritual? Wikipedia defines a ritual as “a set of actions, performed mainly for their symbolic value.” Rituals add meaning to the ordinary and strengthen our connections.

Can creating rituals make a change in your life? Definitely! Our rituals are personal and transformative.

Give some thought to the current rituals in your life – and then think about adding another one or two.

Focus your attention – and intention – on the things that you do, like, and enjoy….and watch them gain more significance. Have fun with this!

What are your current rituals & what rituals have you added?

Gratitude

gratitudeGratitude has been in the press quite a bit over the last year or so. “Gratitude is an attitude” and other such expressions seem to make it into our everyday sayings…well, not quite everyday, but more often than ever before.

So what does gratitude mean to you? Is it hard to find the time to give thanks for the many blessings we have….especially the everyday ones that get taken for granted?

Here is one of my favorite quotes: “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy

I invite you to take a moment – TODAY – and reflect on something that gladdens your heart. Then let your heart fill with gratitude. Feel the positive energy shift – and have yourself a wonderful day!

What are you grateful for today?

Feeling Deserving

self-careNot feeling “deserving” is one of the most pervasive self-limiting beliefs in our subconscious mind. We are frequently unaware of this feeling though.

When we don’t feel deserving at this deep level, it becomes hard for us to take time for ourselves, and this translates often into not eating right, not exercising, not sleeping well etc. We usually are not consciously aware of “not feeling deserving”, but insidiously it lurks under the surface.

Our lives are constantly changing, yet our inherent self worth remains constant. It is my belief that it is your right – your birthright – to feel worthy and deserving of a wonderful life. We do not take time to reflect upon this, because we are so caught up in our daily tasks and obligations.

Do you feel deserving? Many of my clients grew up receiving a message that it was “selfish” to take care of one’s self.

In actuality, it is fantastic when we can take care of ourselves! We become better partners, better parents, and all round more productive citizens when we are self directed, feeling strong and deserving. Getting in touch with our own personal power allows us to become true to ourselves and to be the best we can be.
