Affirmations – Developing your own words of wisdom

Creating AffirmationsWhat are affirmations?  Simply put, an affirmation is a statement of positive intention.  Affirmations are very powerful when spoken aloud.  They enter our realm of consciousness and begin the process of shifting away from the negative and towards the positive.  When repeated frequently, affirmations can flow into our subconscious mind and create an even more powerful effect.

Here are some commonly stated affirmations that you may have heard:

  • Today is the first day of the rest of my life
  • I deserve to be happy
  • One day at a time
  • Yes, I can!

Do you have a favorite affirmation?  Do you want to create one?

Here’s a tip to create an affirmation that is personal and powerful.  State the affirmation in the present tense, and use only positive words.  Take a moment and write down the affirmation you wish to focus on.  Then, think of it often, when at work and when at home.  Trust the power of your mind.  You will find that you will begin to feel more positive and more energized.

The words we speak are extraordinarily powerful. They have the power to hurt as well as heal. When under stress we communicate without thinking; our words are often tinged with anger and resentment.

 

Sometimes we withhold, lapsing into the “silent treatment”. Other times we are sullen and critical. These are all coping mechanisms, ways we have learned to adapt to stressful situations.

 

A good way to stop and think about our words is to slow down and take a breath. I find this so helpful in my life. It opens awareness not just to our words, but also to how we speak as well. For it is not just the words we say but how we say them that is equally important. Often we speak quickly; our words come rushing out fast and furious, without being mindful to our inner feelings. When we open to the awareness of our words, we tend to speak more slowly, and we communicate more thoughtfully.
