Affirmations – Developing your own words of wisdom

Creating AffirmationsWhat are affirmations?  Simply put, an affirmation is a statement of positive intention.  Affirmations are very powerful when spoken aloud.  They enter our realm of consciousness and begin the process of shifting away from the negative and towards the positive.  When repeated frequently, affirmations can flow into our subconscious mind and create an even more powerful effect.

Here are some commonly stated affirmations that you may have heard:

  • Today is the first day of the rest of my life
  • I deserve to be happy
  • One day at a time
  • Yes, I can!

Do you have a favorite affirmation?  Do you want to create one?

Here’s a tip to create an affirmation that is personal and powerful.  State the affirmation in the present tense, and use only positive words.  Take a moment and write down the affirmation you wish to focus on.  Then, think of it often, when at work and when at home.  Trust the power of your mind.  You will find that you will begin to feel more positive and more energized.

The Problem with New Year Resolutions

For most of us there is determination in early January, a waning of confidence in late January, seeds of frustration in early February, and by late February the emergence of feelings of disappointment, doubt and even despair. A pretty sobering picture, indeed. Of course, all of this stems from our well meant intentions for positive change. So why does this go awry? And what can we do about it?

First of all, I must tell you that I used to make New Year resolutions too. I would get excited about the changes that I would make and the habits that I would break. I would get the same feeling I had as a child when school would start and I would have a brand new notebook, clean and uncluttered – setting my intention for very neat penmanship (I obviously am dating myself as this was many years before computers!)  Even then I do remember the frustration I felt as September turned into October and my writing became sloppy – again!

So often we seem to be caught like the proverbial rat on a maze, “trying” to stick to our new plan, and finding ourselves just “powering through”. So how does that “powering through” feel? Tiring and exhausting, to say the least. No wonder we can’t sustain and maintain the changes we so desperately want to accomplish.

The answer is not to give up on setting our intentions. We are always well served to take a look at where we are and where we aim to be.

The answer is to make TODAY count – and not to be restricted to an arbitrary timeline.

Don’t just make a resolution to give up sugar for the month of January or to get back to the gym in February. Make every bite count – TODAY! Get some exercise and move your body – TODAY!

Healthy lifestyle changes can be incorporated easily into your daily routine. Life is much more than black and white – there are many shades of colors in between. Beautiful colors! Be patient with yourself.  Give yourself the ultimate gift at this time of year – love yourself enough to take good care of yourself.  Make the most of every day. You don’t need a New Years resolution – loving yourself today is all that you need.
